WELCOME to Kilkenny Alive. As you read today, you are helping to make history. For Kilkenny Alive is the Republic of Ireland's first online provincial newspaper. It is by Kilkenny journalists for the men, women and children of Kilkenny City and County. It is our intention to focus on The Kilkenny Diaspora, our people who have made their homes in foreign lands, but whose hearts are still in their place of birth.
Our main newspaper willl be online every Wednesday morning. We will give you daily updates on news, sport and entertainment. There will be something for everyone. The intention is to provide a forum for local communities, to encourage people to air their views and to highlight grievances.
Our telephone lines, our email and our office at Loughboy, Kilkenny, will always be available to our people. And our staff will be available at all times to answer queries, to follow up local stories and to help local groups and individuals with a tale to tell. Stories will be accompanied by top class photography courtesy of professional local snapper, Donal Foley of Hugginstown, Co Kilkenny.
We will also be happy to accept photographs of events from, readers and will do out utmost to publicise local events, particularly community activites that still remain and heart and soul of our city and county.
We are happy that we have on board two of Ireland's most exprienced journalists in Sean Hurley and Jim Rhatigan. Between them they have almost 95 years experience in the newspaper business. With their knowledge of Kilkenny City and County and their passion for the profession of journalism, we expect Kilkenny Alive to be a leader in the future of the Irish news industry, the online newspaper.
We are privileged too to have the services of 21-year-old, Mark Brennan of Clara, Co Kilkenny, as our Technical Director. Mark college training ensures that he is fully qualified to ensure that the pages of Kilkenny Alive and bright and breezy.
In setting up Kilkenny Alive, we have enjoyed huge goodwill from local people and indeed from Kilkenny people in the United States and the UK in particular. We have communicated with old friends throughout the region and we have to say that the encouragement and help that have been forthcoming are absolutely marvellous as we face our new challenge with pide and passion.
It would be impossible to list all the people and groups who have offered their support but in particular we would like to mention Kilkenny Enterprise Board who continue to be hugely supportive and helpful,Kilkenny Co Council, Kilkenny Co Board GAA, Kilkenny & District Soccer League, Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, local Churches, businesses and the pulses of local communities, The Fr McGrath and Newpark Close Family Resource Centres.
We are delighted that Kilkenny Alive is moving at high sped. Even before our main office at 7 Cedarwood Close, Loughboy, Kilkenny, was opened, we had a depot at High Street, Kilkenny. Thanks to the goodwill of Anne and Martin Ryan, Ryan Electrical at High Street will accept children's competition entries and act as a branch of a newspaper will will explore every nook and cranny of the Kilkenny family tree.
For the coming weeks, your new local newspaper will be absolutely free. It is our privilege to be welcomed into the homes of the greater Kilkenny family. Hopefully you will enjoy what you read. And remember, this is your newspaper, please do not hesitate to drop us a line to tell us what you think, to make suggestions, and, dare we say it, to offer a little criticism. We certainly won't be above criticism. Our aim is to give Kilkenny people what they want, not what we want for them.
As well as our newspaper, we will also have regular live viewing of social, cultural and sporting events in our area. This will be on a very reasonable pay-per-view basis with local charities getting a percentage of any pofits.
The first charity to benefit will be The Friends of Children with Cancer, run by Kilkenny City man, Michael Coady. Local groups with activities which they want to share online with communities should contact Kilkenny Alive and we will be happy to look after the charity of their choice.
Our belief is that we have exciting times ahead. We look forward to being online for many years to come and look forward to a long and happy relationship with our people.
