Soccer shocker as Tullaroan triumph

By:

TWO results stand out after a weekend of Kilkenny soccer. Freebooters beat old rivals Evergreen in the Maher Shield and Tullaroan knocked Deen Celtic ‘A’ out of the McCalmont Cup.

As Sunday approached, the big interest would have been in the city derby for a place in the semi-final of the Pat Maher Shield. But as weekend results filtererd in, it was the cup shock that proved to be the talking point as Tullarown, better known for their hurling prowess, made Kilkenny soccer sit up and take notice.

Had the bookies taken an interest in the game in Tullaroan, Deen Celtic ‘A’ would have been firm favourites to carry on. In fact it would not have been worthwhile placing a bet on them, the odds would have been so small.

IF THE thriving North Kilkenny town of Castlecomer could bottle its community spirit then it could lay claim to being the richest town of its size on our planet.

That has to be the verdict on a town jam-packed with generous people, a former mining town that got many kicks in the pants, but continues to do its utmost for less fortunate people.

IT WAS wonderfully apt that a CD of traditional Irish music should be launched in a pub called Irish’s in Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny.

Sin é is a treat of music and song by Mursheen and Sean Chairde. It is a 19-track CD that has many favourites, including Rose of Allendale, Isle of Innisfree, Cliffs of Doneen, The Rose of Mooncoin and, naturally, Mursheen Durkin.

Locals turned up in big numbers for the launch by the popular quartet who play a mix of musical instruments and sing some superb ear pleasing harmony.

The Carrickshock side has some very young players but despite being outclassed by Gaelscoil on the day, they put their hearts and souls into the game and did their parish proud.

A DRAW was a fitting result to a crack U9 league game between Kells Road club Evergreen and Fort Rangers of Danesfort.

It was Evergreen who opened the scoring early in the first half when Sean Minogue beat goalkeeper Cathal Ryan from close range.

But the teams were level when Eddie Dunne crashed home a spectacular drive which gave Evergreen’s goalkeeper no chance.

Both teams went close in their bid to grab a winner but despite a series of chances at both ends it remained a 1-1 stalemate.
