The frightening statistics come from Judith Ashton of Thomastown whose son Dan Walsh had a narrow escape just the day before a young woman died when her car crashed into a wall on one of a number of dangerous bends.

Only three hours before Monday’s fatal accident, an anxious Ms Ashton had erected temporary signage, warning that the area on the Thomastown side of Bennettsbridge was an ‘accident black spot’.

She explained to Kilkenny Alive that following her son’s accident on Sunday, in which his car was written off, she had made representations to Kilkenny County Council and local councillors, stressing that urgent action was needed.

For several hours following the fatal accident the road outside Bennettsbridge was closed by Gardai and diversions were in place.

The name of the 21-year-old Kilkenny woman who died following yesterday’s accident is expected to be released shortly.
