A peaceful first for Mayor Malcolm
MAYOR Malcolm Noonan put Kilkenny onto an international platform today when he became the first Irish Mayor – indeed the first Irish practising politician – to endorse the biggest peace movement in world history.
At a ceremony in City Hall, at 2pm, Mayor Noonan gave his signature to the World March for Peace and Non Violence. The movement stands not only for international peace and for the eventual abolition of nuclear weapons, but but also for the protection of all those suffering violence.
This includes unfair practice at all levels such as unfair dismissal, eviction from homes, discriminatory grant cuts affecting the worst off, domestic violence through money, stress or whatever. This is regarded as more relevant than ever in the current thoroughly stressful times.
The endorsement ceremony was filmed by Lisa Heeran from the Young Irish Filmmakers in Kilkenny and will later be displayed on the international website of the World March which currently has over one million members and 1000 organisations affiliated. The film will also be featured on Youtube.
The World March is represented in Ireland and in Kilkenny by The Peace and Non- Violence Association Ireland whose next event in Kilkenny is the Commemoration of Hiroshima on August 8, at tne Peace Park, John's Quay, from 12noon to 4pm.
